Catch the Excitement of Two Popular Bowl Games - Las Vegas Bowl and Armed Forces Bowl

The Las Vegas Bowl originated from the California Raisin Bowl which was played in Fresno, CA from 1981 to 1991. It was designed to create a great match up between champions of the Big West and Mid-American conferences. In 1992, the game was reorganized and moved to Las Vegas where it became the Las Vegas Bowl. It is now played at Sam Boyd Stadium and was the earliest bowl game to be played during the season.

Precedence was set in 1995 when Toledo defeated Nevada 40-37 in overtime, which made Division I-A college football history as the first to go into overtime. Thereafter, overtime policy was adopted for regular season games to break ties beginning the following season.

Another historical first made at the Las Vegas Bowl was the first woman to play in a 2002 Division I-A football game.

Between 2001 and 2002, this bowl became known as the SEGA Sports Las Vegas Bowl, but now that a new sponsor has taken over, it is now called the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl. The bowl is owned by ESPN Regional Television which is more commonly known as ESPN Plus. A rivalry between the Pac-10 and Mountain West Conference (MWC) emerged out of this bowl game leading both to extend their match ups till 2009.

The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl is an annual post season college football bowl game inaugurated in 2003. This was accomplished then as the Fort Worth Bowl under corporate sponsorship of Plains Capital Bank. The game lost sponsorship in 2005, but in 2006, Fort Worth Based Bell Helicopter Textron took over. This particular contest is one of six bowls that is produced by ESPN Regional Television which is known as ESPN Plus. It has been televised annually also on ESPN since it began, and is very popular among sports lovers still today. Teams playing in the Armed Forces Bowl through 2009 include the Pac-10, Conference USA, and MWC.

Both the Las Vegas Bowl and the Armed Forces Bowl are part of the contests televised on ESPN and run by ESPN Plus, which takes up one third of the existing contests. Both are widely watched and attended, and help capture the essence of what ESPN is all about. The Las Vegas Bowl is held in Las Vegas while the Armed Forces Bowl is held in Fort Worth, Texas.
